William Ian Auld is an Aerial Rigger, College Professor and Theatrical Technician who has traveled the world flying people on wires for more three decades. He operates Auld Entertainment a company dedicated to creating a better standard of execution by everyone in the live events industry, and is the General Manager of Flying By Troy, a company dedicated to performer flying effects and scenic effects for theater and live events. Through all this though, he continues to travel the world rigging, lecturing and educating artists on the safe practices for aerial work.
He earned his MFA in Theater from Northern Illinois University and holds a Master’s degree from Bowling Green State University in conjunction with the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, in the United Kingdom. He is currently one of the few hundred people in the world certified to be an ETCP Certified Rigger for both Theater and Arena Rigging and is one of the few dozen people in the world who is an ETCP Recognized Trainer for Rigging. Mr. Auld is currently an observing member of the Professional Lighting and Sound Association’s (PLASA) Rigging Working Group, the group charged with devising, writing, editing and distributing national standards for rigging, truss use and production work for live productions. He is also a member of several organizations including the United States Institute of Theater Technology (USITT), and the Andover RPG Communications Group.
Academically, he served as a Professor of Theatre at Theatre at Kent State University Tuscarawas, opening and running the educational theatre program on that campus for almost a decade. His duties also included helping with the logistics of opening and running the 1100 seat Kent State Tuscarawas Performing Arts Center located there as well. Prior to that, he taught at Northern Illinois University, Bowling Green State University and the United States Army’s Joint Readiness Training Center in Fort Polk, Louisiana.
Through both his educational and professional work, William Ian Auld has acquired numerous credits as Director, Technical Director, Flying Director, and Rigger, for stage, circus, film and corporate events across the world. This work includes being Manager and a Flying Director for Hall Associates Flying Effects (now rebranded as the “Vertigo” flying effects company), and being the Technical Director for the Lookingglass Theater Company out of Chicago, Illinois. He was also the Venue Technician at the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego, California. Domestically, he has worked in almost every state, and internationally he has worked in or toured through dozens of countries including Canada, Mexico, the UK, France, Haiti, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Korea, Panama, Taiwan, Dubai and Norway amongst others. This work includes work the 2019 Big Apple Circus, touring with the IEAG circus out of Tampa, Florida, and the Asian theater tour of ABA Production’s Peter Pan from Hong Kong. He was also an invited guest of the Royal Family of Malaysia to design flying sequences at the Istana Budaya in Kuala Lumpur.
Prior to all that production work however, he spent several happy years of his life jumping out of perfectly good airplanes with the United States Army Airborne Corps.
